Vintage Zuzek Key West Fabrics

In 1961, former Broadway stage actor and producer, Walter Starcke moved to Key West and was involved in real estate development. Just as his newly renovated buildings by Key West Harbor were ready for business, he ran into two old friends from his Broadway days, choreographer Jim Russell and stage manager, Peter Pell, who happened to have the perfect enterprise, a screen print fabric shop ~ Key West Hand Print Fabrics Inc.

Suzie Zuzek DePoo was Key West Hand Print Fabrics’ leading artist and it was where her colorful tropical designs caught the eye of Palm Beach socialite, Lilly Pulitzer, who commissioned Zuzek’s art and Key West Hand Print Fabrics for most of her classic signature resort wear in the 1960s and 70s.

NEWS FLASH!!! – I will soon be listing some pretty amazing fabrics in my Etsy shop, Fabric Madness. All are designed by Zuzek and Pell and a few others – all were made in the 1960s and 1970s at Key West Hand Print Fabrics, Inc. All are clean, crisp, vibrant and brand new old stock stored away for all these years. Sounds exciting to me! Stay tuned…

Both the saucer and the cup are in lovely condition. No chips cracks or repairs. Like new.

Jon Anton Fortune Tellers Tea Cup and Saucer

True story: In 1976, my husband went with a friend to a tea leaf reader who offered to tell him his fortune as well. She told him to take a long walk and he would soon meet his Queen of Hearts. Now, if he had walked out her front door and turned left, he would have walked right past my house. We met a few months later, in the Allaire State Park where I worked at the General Store in the Village, while on one of his long walks. It was love at first sight and we’ve been happily married for 41 years.

Batsto Red Cedar Glass Pitcher

I found this deep amber colored glass pitcher at the Columbus Farmer’s market while rummaging through boxes. I held it up to the early morning sunlight and was delighted to see a deep amber with dark red highlights, no chips, no cracks, and BATSTO NJ 2 embossed on the bottom.  Apparently, this lovely glass commemorative pitcher #2 was made in Wheaton Village in 1980 for the Batsto Village Gift Shop from the red saw dust from the heartwood of a 150 year old red cedar tree that was milled at Batsto following a storm.  It stands 4 1/2″ tall and looks amazing when the sun shines through.
